Omaha

Omaha, a GREAT place to live! Omaha Nebraska is a city with a small town feel. Founded as Omaha City in 1854, it now boasts a population of 428,000 and is centrally located within the United States. Omaha is located along the Missouri River, along the Nebraska/Iowa boarder. Omaha real estate continues to be in demand and whether you desire a downtown loft or a country oasis there is a home for every taste and price level.

Omaha’s economy has served as a major commercial hub for the Midwest. It is seen as the telecommunications capital of the United States but also offers jobs in healthcare, education, agriculture, insurance, transportation and more. Omaha also has a very strong arts community, including performing arts and nationally acclaimed galleries.

Some of Omaha’s attractions include:
Henry Doorly Zoo. Families everywhere love the Henry Doorly Zoo. Founded in 1984 as Riverview Park, Henry Doorly Zoo now rates as the eighth best zoo in North America, according to Best of America online. The zoo features the largest indoor desert and nocturnal exhibits in the world. The Henry Doorly Zoo offers special events throughout the year including its Spooktacular Halloween tours and supper with Santa. Whether you visit the Hubbard Gorilla Valley, the Lied Jungle, IMAX Theater or the new aerial tram, Skyfari, your visit to the zoo will be well worth your time.

College World Series and sports
Omaha is definitely a sports town and has hosted the College World Series for 64 years and counting. Omaha has built a new stadium, completed in 2011, TD Ameritrade Park, that cost $128 million and seats over 24,000 fans. The NCAA Men’s College World Series happens every June and if you are a fan, plan to get your tickets early! It is truly a week like nothing else! Creighton University Men’s baseball also uses the stadium for their home games. Omaha has two hockey teams, University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks and Omaha Lancers, a USHL Tier 1 junior hockey league. The PGA golf tour has made a regular stop in Omaha every August.

Fortune 500 Companies
Union Pacific railroad has made a home in Omaha, Nebraska along with four other Fortune 500 Companies: Berkshire Hathaway, ConAgra, Peter Kiewit Sons, and Mutual of Omaha. There are several other large corporations that are headquartered in Omaha: Gallup, TD Ameritrade, First National Bank, and West Telemarketing. Union Pacific just completed their new headquarters in Downtown Omaha, 14th and Douglas. TD Ameritrade is currently building their new headquarters in West Omaha, Old Mill. Omaha is also home to the Union Pacific Herriman Dispatch Center, located at 8th and Jones Street. This dispatch center controls all 32,000 miles of Union Pacific track. All these major companies employ thousands of people within Omaha and nationwide.

Boys Town Headquarters
Boys Town was founded in 1921 but came to fame in the 1930’s when Hollywood made it the subject of a film. Today, Boys Town is no longer just for boys, but instead houses both boys and girls. It also operates the national help line for teens all over the United States. Boys Town also has locations in 12 other states. The Boys Town goal is to heal emotional, physical, and spiritual wounds of families and children everywhere. If interested, you can tour this amazing campus with a group by calling ahead of time.

Old Market District
Shopping in the Old Market District offers a getaway from the big box stores. The Old Market is filled with one of a kind and boutique shops, cafes, and many bars and restaurants. Store hours vary but most open by 10am and close around 9pm, cafes usually close around 9pm, restaurants range from 10pm-12 (depending on the day of the week), and majority of the bars are open until 2:00am. Housing in this area ranges from condo rentals, condos for sale, townhomes and villas. During the holiday, carolers will fill the air with singing and good cheer throughout the main streets and Gene Leahy Mall. Depending on the weather, horse drawn carriage rides are offered year round. The Old Market features cobblestone streets and old world charm. It is truly something everyone living or visiting Omaha, needs to experience.

Omaha, Nebraska is certainly a one-of-a-kind city. With the Interstate system, Interstate 80, that runs through the city, getting around the city and traveling outside, is quick and easy. Omaha is only 3 hours from Kansas City, only 7 and ½ hours from Chicago, and approximately 9 hours from Denver.

There are four main public school districts: District 66, Elkhorn, Millard Public, and Omaha Public within Omaha. All these districts have multiple elementary, middle, and high schools. Each offers a different atmosphere for students. Some schools specialize in certain areas of study, ie: fine arts, trade, math and science. Millard Public Schools offers an International Baccalaureate program, starting in elementary school and continuing through high school. There are several private schools within Omaha as well. The schools in this area rate top in testing scores. There are also approximately 12 colleges and Universities in the Omaha area.
